Canadian Family Vacations
Planning a Canadian family vacation? We’ve got plenty of fun ideas, by province, to ensure your family makes the most of amazing Canada!
Canadian Family Vacations
As one of the largest countries in the world, Canada has a very diverse landscape and plenty of things to do. A family vacation in Canada could mean hikes through a rainforest or ziplining over a waterfall. The possibilities are endless!
Things To Know When Traveling To Canada
When putting together your Canadian family vacation ideas, keep the below in mind. They are important things to know when traveling to Canada.
- Getting to and around in Canada is easy to do. All major cities have international airports and most are also connected by railway.
- If you’re a fan of road trips, don’t worry, your American driver’s license is valid in Canada (just make sure you have proof of insurance).
- Canada’s currency is the Canadian Dollar (you can click here for current exchange rates).
- Although French is an official language, you can get by speaking only English.
Where To Stay In Canada
For your family vacation in Canada, one suggestion would be staying in cabin rentals. Staying in a cabin will give your vacation a much more personal and authentic feel. It’s also perfect for larger families or if you’re traveling with multiple families.
Another suggestion would be looking for properties on Airbnb. Your Canadian family vacation might be in a major city, and an apartment or home on Airbnb could be much more affordable for your family than multiple hotel rooms.
Canadian Family Vacation Ideas
Canadian family vacations create incredible memories. As we stated earlier, Canada is huge and there is a lot to see and do. Canada has ten provinces and three territories., For this article, however, we’re going to focus on three of its provinces: British Columbia (BC), Ontario, and Quebec.
We hope that you will find this helpful for your family’s visit to any of these areas in Canada and that it will give you some fun Canadian family vacation ideas.
British Columbia Family Vacation Ideas
Just a few hours north of Seattle, Washington is British Columbia. This Canadian province is surrounded by both ocean and forest, with landscapes that will leave you breathless. Victoria, BC’s capital, is home to museums, parks, and great dining.
Do you want your Canadian family vacations to include wildlife? Victoria is known for it! Families can easily book tours to see whales, bears, and many types of birds. Could you imagine seeing a grizzly bear??
Did you know that many films and TV shows have been filmed in Vancouver? There are walking tours available that will introduce you to the city as well as point out where filming has taken place. The popular show The Flash has been filmed in Vancouver, so we know kids (and some adults!) will love it.
Whistler has been voted Top 10 Family Vacations in Canada, and it’s easy to see why. Families can explore waterfalls, go mountain biking, or try snowboarding!
Pro Tip: Although in the province of Alberta, we must mention that camping in Banff is also a great idea for a family vacation in Canada.
Ontario Family Vacation Ideas
Ontario will always have a special place in our hearts, specifically Toronto, because it’s the first part of Canada that we explored. Toronto is such a diverse city, with fun things for the entire family.
Two of our favorite memories from our time in Toronto was when we cruised around on a Toronto bike tour and when we did a free walking tour. We learned a lot on both tours and had a lot of fun.
Ontario is also known for its waterfalls. The most well-known is of course Niagara Falls, but there are many others in the province. Make sure to stop in Hamilton, considered the “Waterfall Capital of the World” with almost 100 waterfalls. There, visitors will find Albion Falls. Words cannot describe its beauty.
Some of the best Canadian family vacations involve getting out on the water. And with over 250,000 lakes, that shouldn’t be hard to do! Rent a boat and enjoy some quality time together.
Pro Tip: If you want to do some hiking, we suggest the Bruce Trail. It’s a legendary Ontario Trail!
Quebec Family Vacation Ideas
As the largest city in Quebec, Montreal has a lot to offer its visitors. It’s known as a foodie city, so we highly recommend taking your family on a food tour. Did you know Canada has the most donut shops in the world?
If you’re a fan of street art, be prepared. Montreal has amazing street art! The Notre-Dame Basilica is also incredible and a must-see.
Quebec City, the capital of Quebec, is full of European charm. Enjoy a walk along cobblestone streets or enjoy delicious pastries. And just outside of Quebec City, is Montmorency Falls. This is yet another set of Canadian waterfalls that will leave you amazed. It’s only 15 minutes from downtown, is 30 meters taller than Niagara Falls, and has a double zipline at the top!
Boasting some of the best ski resorts in the world, Mont-Tremblant is another fun place we recommend for a family vacation in Canada. There are plenty of activities in the area like skiing and snowboarding (for all levels), ice skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and even dog sledding.
