Sandy Beach In Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point)

Sandy Beach in Puerto Penasco, Mexico, sometimes called Rocky Point, is one of the best beaches in Mexico for families. Being an easy 4-hour drive from the Phoenix area, Americans refer to it as “Arizona’s Beach”.

Located in the northwestern area of Puerto Penasco, Sandy Beach is a favorite among locals and visitors. The shallow clear waters are calm, making the beach perfect for wading, swimming, and family fun. Lounge chairs and cabanas are available from local vendors near the resorts on the beach.

Playa Coromuel In La Paz

Amongst all the beautiful beaches in La Paz, Playa Corumuel is the closest to the city and the most family-friendly. You can either walk to the beach from La Paz or if you have your own car, you will find a convenient car park right in front. 

The white sand beach has a few sun umbrellas for some shade, but there are not many. It’s advisable to avoid weekends when it’s most crowded and arrive early in the morning when you have more chance to find an available umbrella. 

The easy access to the sea makes it a family-friendly beach where kids can play in the shallow water close to the shore and adults can find some nice depth for a good swim.

There are a couple of restaurants and snack bars where you can enjoy a light lunch or breakfast and spend all day on the beach. Bathrooms are also available for visitors to use. 

The closest hotel to Playa Coromuel is Hotel La Concha. It is a three-star hotel located between two equally beautiful and family-friendly beaches, playa La Concha and Playa El Caymancito. Both beaches are also worth visiting and family-friendly.  

Please keep in mind that from Hotel La Concha to Playa Coromuel there is no boardwalk. So, although they are close to each other, walking there is not convenient.

Playa Balandra In La Paz

Often referred to as ‘Mexico’s most beautiful beach’, Playa Balandra features pristine white sand and crystal clear waters and makes for a great family day out. Balandra Beach is actually a bay made up of seven beaches, with one main public beach. At low tide, large sandbanks are exposed and it’s possible to walk right out into the middle of the picturesque bay. Umbrellas and chairs are available for hire and those looking for a fun way to explore the bay can kayak the surrounding mangroves. 

There are no facilities at Balandra Beach, so it’s best to prepare with a picnic and lots of water. There are also two entry slots, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, to limit numbers and conserve this natural gem.

Playa Balandra is easily accessible by car from Baja California Sur’s vibrant capital La Paz and is only a 30-minute drive. There is also a public bus that runs between downtown La Paz and the road outside the beach. Hotel & Suites El Moro is a wonderful family-friendly resort situated conveniently on the northern end of La Paz’s malecón. To eat, Mexican restaurant Mc-Fisher is a firm favorite with locals and tourists alike.

Medano Beach In Cabo San Lucas

Conveniently located near downtown Cabo San Lucas, Medano Beach is one of the best beaches in Mexico for families. As one of the few swimmable beaches in Los Cabos, Medano Beach offers golden sand with calm waters and gentle waves.  Plus, it offers fantastic views of the iconic “El Arco” rock formation, which can be admired while enjoying a leisurely stroll along the shoreline.

The easiest way to get to Medano Beach is by driving or taking a taxi.  The area is busy and there are plenty of restaurants, hotels, and beach clubs located right on the beach. Playa El Suspiro In Cabo San Lucas

Playa El Suspiro is a local beach perfect for avoiding the crowded touristy beaches of Cabo San Lucas. It is located in the area of Hard Rock Resort, also known as Diamante. This is a public beach and you will often see local families here as it is not popular with tourists yet. This beach is great for hanging out, lounging, walking dogs, and shore fishing!

This beach is about 20 minutes from the tourist corridor of Cabo San Lucas. You must be careful as the waves can be strong here, being on the Pacific Coast and not on the Sea of Cortez side. It is, still, more swimmable than other beaches in Cabo. There are no restrooms and you must bring your own beach umbrellas because it is underdeveloped. This beach has a backdrop of the desert, setting it apart from other beaches in Mexico.

A great nearby restaurant is a local pizza place called Pizza Nostra, a restaurant only known to locals. You will not find many foreigners here, but the staff can speak English. It has a rustic outdoor vibe and you will get to see the local life in Cabo that is not known to many. However, you may want to call in advance to order and bring your pizza to the beach should you decide to stay on the beach for an entire afternoon.

The closest hotels are the Hard Rock Hotel and Nobu Hotel, but Playa El Suspiro is not on their property. Both resorts have their own private beach access so this beach is typically for local life and adventurous family travellers.

Cabo Pulmo Near Cabo San Lucas

Cabo Pulmo is a fantastic beach if you want to avoid the hustle in Cabo San Lucas. It’s just a 2-hour drive from Los Cabos, ideal for families looking for something quiet, remote, and private. It is particularly great for families with toddlers since you can relax without worrying about your kids! You will often find yourself alone on this beach as it is yet to be famous.

You can take a day trip to Cabo Pulmo if you are staying in Los Cabos, Todos Santos, or La Paz. There are no umbrellas and chairs, so you must bring your own. There are public restrooms, and there are also many beachfront restaurants in Cabo Pulmo. However, it is ideal to stay at least one night to enjoy the Cabo Pulmo National Park, a UNESCO-protected site.

While there are many restaurants in Cabo Pulmo, a great option for dining is Tacos and Beer, where you can get the best seafood tacos, fresh from the Sea of Cortez. Tacos and Beer is an outdoor beachfront restaurant that is quite affordable and has a great scenic view. Here, you’ll get to try iconic dishes of Baja California Sur like tacos de pulpo and Baja-style fish tacos.

Bungalows Cao Pulmo is an eco-friendly and affordable B&B in Cabo Pulmo. It is a 50-meter walk to the beach and prices start at $75 USD. Alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous and are an outdoorsy family, you can camp on the beach without a cost. You just have to bring your own tent.

Playa Norte In Celestun

If you are looking for an uncrowded beach on the Gulf of Mexico, then look no further than Playa Norte in Celestun in the Yucatan. Celestun is a picturesque fishing town on the west coast of the Yucatan known for its boat trips to see the migrating flamingos. The sandy beach has a family atmosphere with umbrellas and palapas to lounge under and enjoy a family picnic, making it one of the best beaches in Mexico for families. There is also an open-air market on the beach to buy Mexican crafts or beach supplies.

Celestun is about an hour’s drive from Merida. There are also public buses and tours from Merida to bring you to Celestun.

Playa Norte On Isla Mujeres

Playa Norte is not only the most beautiful beach on Isla Mujeres, but it’s also one of the best beaches in Mexico for families. The long, expansive beach is located on Isla Mujeres and is an easy day trip from Cancun or Playa del Carmen, though it also makes a wonderful base for spending a few days. The water is shallow and turquoise, with stunning white sand, which makes it perfect for kids to swim, build sand castles, and enjoy. 

Another reason Playa Norte is fantastic? It somehow manages to escape the sargassum (seaweed) that can plague other Mexican beaches. Even when the beaches in Playa del Carmen and Cancun are bombarded with sargassum, Playa Norte stays clear. 

Playa Norte is a public beach, so you can feel free to bring your own blanket and umbrella or you can opt to rent one from one of the restaurants along the coast. The Mayan Beach Club offers chairs and a decent food menu. Other restaurants nearby include Beachin’ Burrito, North Garden, and Lola Valentina.

Playa Langosta In Cancun

The popular beach destination of Cancun is mainly famous for luxurious beachfront hotels and the turquoise water of the Caribbean Sea, and rightfully so. Although the Cancun hotel zone stretches along a 22km long beach, the beach access is not the same in all its parts.  

In fact, some areas of Cancun Beach offer easier access to the water than others. So if you are looking for a more family-friendly beach in Cancun, Playa Langosta is probably your best choice. 

Although the majority of the Cancun beaches are located right in front of the Hotels, beaches in Cancun are public and accessible from the Avenida Kukulcan, the road that connects Cancun Downtown to the Hotel Zone.  

Located at km 5.4 of Avenida Kululcan, Playa Langosta is a public beach. It is suitable for kids for its shallow waters and soft white sand, where kids can play safely in and out of the water. 

If you want to enjoy the comfort of a nearby Hotel Casa Maya is a budget all-inclusive hotel suitable for families. 

Otherwise, you can enjoy the public beach facilities, including a snack bar and a small recently built waterpark.

If you get there by car, you will find a spacious parking lot at the entrance. Otherwise, you can get there by public transportation. The R1 and R2 buses run along the Hotel Zone all day long.

Playa Marlin In Cancun

Playa Del Carmen

If you find yourself in Playa del Carmen with the family then you won’t want to miss out on the beach with runs parallel to the busy and colorful 5th Avenue walking street. First, get to Parque Los Fundadores. There you will see the huge Mayan statue featuring a man and woman in a swirl of water and wind. As you step through the portal you are literally at the main beach’s entrance.

You will see many other families here, especially in the afternoons as it is the safest time to soak up the sun and the perfect place to be at sunset. For families traveling on a budget, the best time to visit Playa del Carmen is usually February or October. However, the great thing is that no matter what time of year you arrive here, you are always close to many great restaurants. One such restaurant is Porfirio’s, which offers an incredible selection of Mexican food for all the family.

Despite all the nearby shops and amenities, it is worth noting that there are no toilets on the beach. Aside from the sun, clear blue sea, and white sand, the best thing about this beach is the fact that it is so close to the main walking street. This means the family has the benefit of both settings simultaneously.

When it comes to a place to stay, check out Hotel Bosque Caribe for a room on 5th Avenue. If you’re staying here with younger children, though, you may want to pick somewhere slightly further back from the beach.

Playa Palancar In Cozumel

Calm, shallow, and perfectly clear, Playa Palancar on Cozumel is one of the best beaches in Mexico for families. It’s tucked away from the main strip where cruise ships land, so it tends not to be as busy as other popular beaches, but it’s still easy to access. Because the water is both calm and shallow, it’s an ideal spot for families with small kids. Plus, there are many activities available like snorkeling, kayaking, SUP, jet skis, and even a banana boat.

The easiest way to get to Playa Palancar is via car. There is ample parking if you have a rental or you can take a taxi. (Always negotiate the price beforehand!) There are usually taxis waiting in the parking lot for a ride to your next stop, especially at closing time – which is quite early at 5 PM. 

Playa Palancar is located in front of the Playa Palancar Beach Club, which is free to enter but they do ask that you consume food or drinks at their restaurant (which is actually pretty good!). They do have sun beds, chairs, and umbrellas available for a reasonable fee as well.

If you want to stay nearby, check out the Iberostar Cozumel. The all-inclusive resort is located just a mile up the road from Playa Palancar.

Paradise Beach In Cozumel

Paradise Beach Park is a perfect family-friendly beach on Cozumel, a popular island for resorts and divers. The beach has gorgeous soft white sand, clear waters with a large sheltered shallow area perfect for kids to wade in, and a large inflatable playground with climbing structures and waterslides for older kids (and adults who want to have fun).

Plus, it has lots of amenities that adults will enjoy, including beach chairs and umbrellas to lounge in, submerged loungers in the water, two bars (The Coconut Bar and Tequila Bar), and two on-site restaurants — the fish tacos and ceviches are favorites.

There are bathrooms and showers on-site and everything is kept very well-cleaned because this beach club sees fairly high traffic. It’s a common pit stop among divers in Cozumel during their surface interval.

Note that there are fees associated with the use of their amenities. An all-inclusive day pass (including meals and drinks) is $60 per person. Access to the inflatable park is $18, and day beds cost $50 per day.

Everything enjoys a view of the glittering Caribbean boats and the many dive boats and snorkeling boats that go zipping past!

Playa Xpu-Ha In Riviera Maya

Located on Mexico’s Caribbean coast just south of Playa del Carmen, Playa Xpu-Ha (pronounced “Ish-Poo-Ha”) is a great beach for families looking to escape the crowds. With its secluded location, powder white sand, and bright turquoise water, this Riviera Maya beach is a hidden gem that is not well-known among tourists.

The easiest way for families to get to Playa Xpu-Ha is by driving or taking a taxi. This takes about 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen. Once you arrive, you’ll need to pay a small entrance fee (~$70 pesos per person), which includes parking and the use of public restrooms. 

Playa Xpu-Ha has both beach clubs and free stretches of beach so you can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas if you wish or bring your own beach gear for a family beach day.  The best beach clubs at Playa Xpu-Ha are Xpu-Ha Beach Club and Serenity Beach Club, both offering comfortable lounge chairs, food and beverage service, restrooms, and amenities.

While visiting Playa Xpu-Ha, families can enjoy simple pleasures like swimming in the sea, soaking up the sun, and building sandcastles. Plus, there are additional water activities like snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaks, jet skis, and banana boat rides for those seeking a bit more adventure.

For those looking to stay near Playa Xpu-Ha, the closest family-friendly hotel is Barcelo Maya Beach, which is located on the expansive Barcelo complex just north of Playa Xpu-Ha.

Playa Akumal

Swimming with wild sea turtles on Akumal Beach is one of the most unique and amazing things you can do with your family in Mexico. 

Akumal Beach has a natural seaweed garden where sea turtles love to feed. The ocean corridor where this seaweed grows is shallow, only around 3 meters deep. This makes it perfect for snorkeling and seeing the sea turtles in their natural habitat up close.

A few years ago, when snorkeling with the sea turtles at Akumal became popular, locals and animal conservationists intervened and now it’s a regulated activity. This was both for the safety of the animals and tourists. You need a guide to go out to view the sea turtles up close in Akumal, and all snorkelers also need to be wearing a life vest. 

Other cool things you can see up close on Akumal Beach are sting rays and an ancient canon. It fell off a Spanish ship and now rests underwater off the coast of Akumal Beach. 

Snorkeling at Akumal is a great day trip from Cancun, Tulum, or Playa del Carmen. If you want to make a whole day of it you can also visit Akumal Lagoon. It is a natural cenote perfect for snorkeling and seeing ocean fish, and La Buena Vida Treehouse bar and cafe. 

If you want a relaxing retreat from some of the larger tourist hubs on the Mayan Riviera, you can also stay in a beachfront hotel in Akumal. The most famous hotel in Akumal is the 5-star Bahia Principe Hotel, which is an all-inclusive and ultra-luxurious beachfront getaway.

Playa Paraiso In Tulum

For those seeking a slice of paradise, Playa Paraiso is nothing short of a dream come true, and is one of the best beaches in Mexico for families!

This stunning beach, located just 7 km from Tulum downtown is the epitome of tranquillity, with palm trees swaying in the breeze and turquoise water lapping at the shoreline. The white sand is soft and inviting, perfect for a relaxing day under the sun. The water is shallow, and mostly calm, which is perfect for kids.

Despite being a public beach, there is plenty of space for everyone, and the chilled vibe is perfect for some rest and relaxation. You can either stretch your own towel under the shade of palm trees or rent a pair of sunbeds for the day and enjoy a drink and food served straight to your lounger.

Playa Paraiso is one of the best places to stay in Tulum. It is much more affordable than the Zona Hotelera, quieter, and more relaxed, which is ideal for families. A good choice is the family-friendly El Paraiso Hotel which features double, triple, and quadruple rooms and a beachfront location.

For a tasty beach grab, head to Revolucion Pancho which serves mouth-watering fajitas and fully-loaded nachos.

There are no public services such as restrooms, and the public car park gets filled quickly, but there are some paid car parks too.

Playa Carrizalillo In Puerto Escondido

As you descend the 150-plus steps to the beach, the golden sand and turquoise waters of Playa Carrizalillo await. This beach features small but fun waves. This makes it one of the best beaches in Mexico for families to enjoy.

Nestled between two tall cliffs anchored by towering palm trees, Playa Carrizalillo is also one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Escondido.

There are a handful of beach restaurants at Playa Carrizalillo that will allow you to use their shaded tables with a minimum consumption amount. Although you should ask before sitting in one of the beach loungers as these often have an extra fee to use.

If you prefer to claim your own space on the beach, bring what you need for the day. Keep in mind, though, there is very little shade on Playa Carrizalillo in the middle of the day. There are public restrooms available to use for a 5 peso fee, which is fairly standard in Mexico. 

Playa Carrizalillo is conveniently located in the heart of Rinconada, close to some of the best restaurants in Puerto Escondido. I recommend La Salsa for its incredibly fresh seafood and beach vibes.

If you want to stay close to the beach, rent a room at Villas Carrizalillo. This boutique hotel is located on top of one of the aforementioned cliffs. It features sweeping ocean views, a swimming pool, and direct access to the beach at Playa Carrizalillo.

Playa La Ropa In Zihuatanejo

This gently sloped, soft sand beach is nestled in a protected bay of the Pacific, ideal for swimming and paddle boarding. If you get hungry, there are vendors walking around selling snacks, or you can head over to any of the many restaurants along the water. El Dorado Restaurant is a popular option that offers international dishes with a Mexican twist.
