Spatch Peri-Peri Chicken In Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Spatch Peri-Peri Chicken In Fort Lauderdale, Florida

You shouldn’t have to sacrifice bold flavor for healthy food. And at Spatch Peri-Peri Chicken in Fort Lauderdale, you don’t have to!

Have you been searching for a healthy food restaurant in Fort Lauderdale? We know that isn’t easy to do, especially if you want the food to taste great and not break the bank. Stavros Florias, originally from South Africa, noticed that there weren’t too many healthy restaurants in South Florida, so he decided to open Spatch Peri-Peri Chicken in Fort Lauderdale.

The restaurant’s specialty is chicken that has been marinated in South African spices for at least 24 hours and then grilled over an open flame. The marinade consists of Peri-Peri (African Bird’s Eye Chili) and other secret spices and varies in heat from holy-smoking spicy to soul warming. The chicken (which is also hormone free, steroid free, and never frozen) can then be bought by the piece, in salads, bowls, or sandwiches.

During our visit, Stavros explained the process of cooking the chicken with Peri-Peri and told us about the health benefits of the chili, which is loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. He also pointed out that much of the decor inside the restaurant had been brought over from South Africa, including lamp fixtures and a beautiful mural that had been hand painted on tiles and then put together at the restaurant.

To accompany their chicken, Spatch also has a variety of sides to choose from. They are all made daily, in-house. We tried samples of their rice and beans, sweet and spicy kale, coleslaw, grilled corn on the cob, and fries (their fries are the only fried item on the menu).

But obviously, the best part of our visit was trying their different salads, bowls, and sandwiches. Our favorite bowls were the 3 Grain Bowl (tomato braised farro, barley and bulgur wheat with spinach, feta and chopped grilled chicken) and the Super Mac and Cheese. We really liked the tomato flavoring of the 3 Grain Bowl and the Super Mac and Cheese had seasoned bread crumbs that we really enjoyed.

It was hard to pick a favorite sandwich though. We thought the three we sampled were all great and would order any of them, depending on the mood we were in. The Spatch was made up of grilled chicken thigh, sharp cheddar, coleslaw, house pickles, sweet hot peppers, and Spatch Peri-mayo. We liked this sandwich a lot because of the sweet and spicy tang it had. The Chicken Club had grilled chicken breast, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato and mayo. This kind of sandwich is normally our go-to because we love bacon and avocado. The third sandwich we tried was the Pineapple Chicken which had grilled chicken thigh, grilled pineapple, avocado, pickled onions, cilantro, and Spatch Peri-mayo. This sandwich surprised us the most! We’re not really into pineapples but we felt that in the case of this sandwich, it wasn’t too overpowering and paired nicely with the Peri-mayo.

Oh, and if you end up falling in love with the sauces (which you will!) you can buy some bottles to take home. We really liked the Lemon & Herb sauce, so we currently have a bottle of it in our kitchen. 😉

Oh wow–this place looks amazing! We will have to check it out next time we are in the area. It’s always nice to find healthy and delicious spots. Everything looks so good, but the Southwestern Bowl is right up my alley! Yum!

  • Kim-Ling says:

That’s cool he brought the mural and light fittings over from South Africa! They look great in the restaurant. And the burger would be my pick! Yum!

  • Mags says:

That looks incredible! I love Peri-Peri chicken, I had no idea there was any place to get it in Florida!

  • I adore Peri-Peri chicken, this looks delish! I’m totally drooling now.

  • Hello Vicky. Great post. I had Peri-peri chicken for the first time in Baltimore last year. I kept telling the group the we needed to go to Medieval Times and they scoffed. It was a running joke on the trip that probably only I found funny. We ended up at the Peri-peri place right next to, you guessed it – Medieval Times. It was some seriously good food. The spices were deeply marinated into the meat and the burn was steady from the tip of your tongue down your throat. It was by far my favorite food from the trip. I am supposed to go back in three weeks and now I have to get more peri-peri chicken after reading your post.

This made me hungry!! I love peri-peri chicken, but Spatch’s offerings are on a whole other level! The pineapple chicken sandwich sounds amazing. That mac and cheese is pretty enticing too. I had no idea that the chili in peri-peri seasoning had vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. What a great excuse to eat more! Thanks for sharing about this place 🙂

  • Yuen Mi says:

MMMM…I love peri peri chicken since the first time I had it at Nando’s. It’s the most amazing sauce ever. Since then I’ve been trying to make my own, but it’s never the same as the restaurant. So I’ve just been buying extra sauces lol. This looks like a restaurant I would definitely go to if I’m ever in Florida. Everything just looks so delicious!

  • Astrid Vinje says:

I love peri-peri chicken. The spice is so flavorful. That’s awesome there’s a place like this in Fort Lauderdale, FL. It just goes to show that the world is becoming more globally connected!

  • Heather says:

Oh my gosh, my mouth is watering! All the dishes look so good, not sure where I’d begin. My husband and I spent some time in South Africa last year and became obsessed with the Peri-Peri chicken. The spices are so flavorful. Looking forward to visiting Spatch on our visit home to Fort Lauderdale this summer. Thanks for the recommendation!

  • Megan Jerrard says:

Thanks for the review! I love that he started with a mission to bring more of a healthy food scene to South Florida – the Pineapple chicken looks and sounds divine! Peri-Peri chicken is covered here in Australia at a place called Nandos, but I would love to get back to Florida again soon 🙂
